Located in Lourdes, opposite the Grotto, Saint Bernadette Church is an emblematic place of worship in the Sanctuary of Lourdes. It is located on the right bank of the Gave de Pau, a position that offers it an exceptional natural setting.

History of Saint Bernadette Church

Built between 1982 and 1988, Saint Bernadette Church was designed by the architect Jean-André Delorme. Its inauguration took place in 1988 on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin to Bernadette Soubirous.

A place of worship to cope with the influx of pilgrims

The construction of Saint Bernadette Church responded to a specific need: to be able to welcome all the pilgrims who came to pay homage to Saint Bernadette, whose number was constantly growing. Its capacity is 5,000 people.

A modern and daring architectural edifice

Saint Bernadette Church is an architectural success. It is distinguished by an ovoid shape and a raw concrete structure which give it a resolutely modern appearance. Its design was guided by the desire to create a space for contemplation conducive to spirituality.

An architecture turned towards nature

The church is oriented to offer a breathtaking view of the Grotto and the Gave. Its ovoid shape evokes the image of an upturned ship’s hull, a symbol of protection and refuge. The choice of materials, such as raw concrete, was made to integrate harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment.

A place full of spirituality

Beyond its remarkable architecture, Saint Bernadette Church is a place full of spirituality. It invites contemplation and prayer, offering a space of peace for all those who come seeking comfort.

The presence of Saint Bernadette

Even though the remains of Bernadette Soubirous rest in Nevers, her presence is strongly felt at Saint Bernadette Church. A statue of her, created by the sculptor Fabisch, is exhibited in the church to recall her importance in the history of Lourdes.

In conclusion, Saint Bernadette Church is much more than just a place of worship. It is a place where history, architecture and spirituality meet, offering a unique experience to all visitors.
