Lourdes Sanctuary Live: Places of Prayer and Estate Visit
Plan and map of the Notre-Dame Sanctuary
The sacred domain extends over 52 hectares. To follow the processions on TV or prepare your walk, here are the strategic points of the Sanctuary map :
Sacred monuments to discover
The Grotto of Massabielle (Place of apparitions)
This is the beating heart of the sanctuary. It is in this rocky cavity that the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. At the back of the Grotto, under the statue of the Immaculate Conception, flows the Source miraculous discovered by Bernadette. This is the precise location filmed 24/7 by our cameras.
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception
Often called the « Upper Basilica », it dominates the Grotto with its slender spire. It was built in direct response to the Virgin’s request: « Go tell the priests to build a chapel here ». Its stained glass windows retrace the history of the Virgin Mary and the apparitions.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary
Located below, the « Lower Basilica » is recognizable by its two large elliptical ramps that seem to embrace the Esplanade like maternal arms. This jewel of Romanesque-Byzantine architecture is famous for its immense interior mosaics dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary.
The Saint Pius X Basilica (Underground)
Invisible from the surface, this immense concrete basilica built underground is shaped like an overturned boat hull. Inaugurated in 1958, it can accommodate up to 25,000 pilgrims, housing the great international masses in case of rain or high attendance.
Accueil Saint-Frai – Managed by a congregation, another place of welcome for the sick.
Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary – Located below the Upper Basilica, in Byzantine style.
Monumental Stations of the Cross – On the hill of Espélugues, with large statues.
Cité Saint-Pierre – Managed by Secours Catholique, a place of solidarity accommodation.
Saint Bernadette Church – Located opposite the Grotto, on the right bank of the Gave.
The Grotto of Massabielle – Site of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous. It is the spiritual heart of the Sanctuary.
Bernadette’s House / Cachot – Located in the city, but linked to the Sanctuary.
The gesture of water – Ritual offered to pilgrims for washing their hands and face, and drinking the water.
The Baths – Where pilgrims can symbolically bathe in the water of Lourdes (closed since Covid, replaced by the Water Gesture)
Statue of the Crowned Virgin – In front of the basilica, one of the emblematic symbols.
