An integral part of the Sanctuary of Lourdes, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the Upper Basilica, is a place of pilgrimage and Marian devotion. Built above the famous Grotto of Lourdes, it is a true masterpiece of 19th-century religious architecture.
Historical Context
The construction of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was initiated following the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. Indeed, the idea of building a church above the Grotto where these apparitions took place was suggested by the Virgin herself during the sixteenth apparition. Work began in 1866 and was completed in 1871.
Architecture of the Basilica
The work of the architect Hippolyte Durand, the Upper Basilica is in the Neo-Gothic style. Its structure, in the form of a Latin cross, is 51 meters long and 21 meters wide. It is surmounted by a 70-meter-high bell tower, adorned with a statue of the Virgin gilded with fine gold. The interior of the Basilica is adorned with mosaics representing the mysteries of the Rosary and the life of the Virgin Mary.
The Grotto of Massabielle
Located directly beneath the Basilica, the Grotto of Massabielle is the heart of the Sanctuary. It is here that the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous 18 times. Today, the Grotto is a place of prayer and reflection for millions of pilgrims each year.
Spiritual Significance
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception. It symbolizes the strong link between heaven (the Basilica) and earth (the Grotto), and recalls the Virgin’s message to Bernadette: “Go tell the priests to come here in procession and to build a chapel here.”
Pilgrimage to Lourdes
Lourdes is one of the main Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Each year, millions of pilgrims come to pray at the Grotto and attend Masses and processions at the Basilica. The Sanctuary of Lourdes, with the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the Grotto, is a place of faith, hope, and spiritual healing.
In conclusion, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is not only a historical and architectural monument but also a place of great spirituality. Its position above the Grotto of Massabielle makes it a unique place of Marian devotion.
